When Alumnus Huntley Evans (OC1975) had the option of a metal work project vs a 10,000 word essay he chose the practical option. He started planning and built an equatorial sundial under the supervision of the metal work master Mr Pumphrey (when Mr Morrison was headmaster). At this point Huntley was in the lower sixth form (17 years old). On completion it was installed behind Staff House, and it has it has stood there ever since. Huntley kindly took it away to fix and returned it to school this week.
After leaving Colyton in 1975 Huntley joined the Royal Navy and then on to work in engineering at Westland Helicopters, Yeovil.
